Life as a fighter pilot
When I was a Mission Commander for the Swiss Air Force, I led training missions abroad. We participated in big international exercises. We trained with or against many other countries (England, Spain, Holland, Norway, Sweden, United States). Some missions involved more than 50 aircraft in the air representing up to 6 nations. At that time, the Swiss Air Force had only the small, underperforming F-5 Tiger and the Mirage III. I was flying the F-5 as a division lead. This aircraft had only two 20 mm guns in the nose and two short-range infrared missiles on the wings. Our aircraft was old, limited by its outdated technology and weaponry.
We fought against more advanced platforms such as the F-16, F-18, F-15, and the Tornado; all had better capability and weaponry. Nonetheless, the Swiss pilots kicked ass. We became a respected ally or opponent. We won many dogfights against more advanced aircraft. Pilots from other countries often questioned: “Who are those pilots from this tiny, neutral country? What is their secret to winning so many times in dogfight?” The answer was simple.
We knew we couldn’t win any dogfight with the performance of our aircraft; but we could win if, as pilots, we focused on performing at our highest level and on being outstanding leaders. As a pilot, I was the only factor with unlimited potential.
As a commander and flight instructor, I trained elite pilots for many years. I knew that without them performing at their highest, they would have no chance to win, even worse they could die. We couldn’t afford to be at 90% of our personal capabilities. Being 100% for every single flight was a necessity not only to win but to survive.
Now, why am I telling you this story?
If the aircraft is your business or company, you, as a leader are the pilot of the aircraft. You can have the best aircraft in the world, but, if the pilot is not performing to his highest capability, you won’t succeed. If you want to get ahead of your competition and win, you need to focus on improving your leadership skills and the performance of your team. YOU, the pilot, have unlimited potential. So, this where I start.
When I work with you or your team, I first focus on bringing your life to the next level of performance. I am a result-oriented person. I want you and your team to perform like the top high performers in the world; the ones who don’t only have success in business, but have a very fulfilled and purposeful life. I was one of the top 8 fighter pilot instructors in my country, Mission Commander, and Chief Pilot in international exercises. I have 13 years of international business experience representing my country (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs for Switzerland).
I am a master scuba diver instructor (highest rating accreditation in the industry) certified to dive in the deepest water with multiple tanks and multiple gases. All my life, I have lived in a world where being on the top of your game was a necessity.
When you fly past Mach 1.0 or dive below 300 feet, you understand how important it is to perform at your highest level. You cannot afford any mistakes. When you fly at such a speed, you cannot hesitate. When you dive to these depths with multiple gases, any mistake is fatal. High Performance is in my DNA.
When people ask me what is my superpower, my answer is simple: “my unique ability to find simple solutions to complex problems while maximizing performance.” All those experiences have given me the perspective and authority to coach high performance and leadership to the top executives, entrepreneurs, and business leaders worldwide..
